"The author of the present book, Michael B. Jackson, has endevored to give the ex-prisioner useful and precise information regarding what he would have to do after being released from prison, and employing in its execution a language fitted to the subject and within the reach of every reader.

Mr. Jackson makes a fine display of his deep humanism and nobility of spirit, and bases his work on his experience as an ex-prisoner himself. He, better than anyone else, knows and understands the penal system of the United States, a knowledge he now gladly shares with those contemplating freedom.

Now, with this new Spanish version, useful and painful at the same time because of its necessity to write it, the Hispanic ex-prisoner would be able to have a better understanding of his duties and how to best fulfill them, thus allowing him to lead a more tranquil and happy life. I am grateful to Mr. Jackson for the opportunity he has afforded me to translate his book into Spanish, and for the trust he has deposited on me to make it worthy of the original. I hope that he, as well as the reader, are satisfied with my work which I have done with the interest and diligence it well deserves.

¬ÝSad is the life of every prisoner, regardless of the crime he may have committed. To deprive a human being of his freedom and pull him away abruptly and perhaps forever from his natural circumstance, his home, and his loved ones, is the true sentence to a certain death, unless it is that which by his misfortune and mistake has been put aside for the criminal in the eternal world of suffering. It is much more felt in this country where freedom is considered a divine gift and innate in every person, in contrast to other countries where freedom is more apparent than real. In the United States freedom weighs, it is palpable, it is breathed and, when a person is deprived of it, his soul wanders in a world of darkness and despair. But, as freedom is taken seriously in the United States, it is no less taken to threaten it, to offend deeply the natural right of every individual to his well being and security as guaranteed by the nation’Äôs democratic principles. Hence it is punished severely when it is abused, with no other consideration to the perpetrator than to respect his fundamental human and citizenship rights.

Mr. Jackson deserves the highest esteem and admiration for having overcome in such an exemplary manner a shadowy stage of his life and to be today a person worthy of deep admiration.
